It's been a long time since I've been on and I've missed this so very much. It's amazing how we take love for granted..and then when it's gone, we can't remember how we lost it in the first place and have absolutely no idea how to get it back.  My first love is writing. It's never let me down and no matter how many times I leave, my pen is always waiting there patiently for me to return.  He exists for me, and I take him for granted. So I've decided to start something new...the Bible says that we are all blessed with gifts but if we refuse to use them, they may be lost forever [paraphrased]. Therefore, I've decided to return to my first love and to never leave him again...with the hopes that he'll turn his back to the wind of the past and trust that I'll be here with him forever.

The Girl with the Pink Hair

The girl with the cotton candy pink hair
Bubblegum-flavored lipgloss
Fishnet stockings paired with hot pink pumps
to match her shimmering star earrings
The same size as the star encasing her eyes
Simply a star she is, a gold mine of desire
Raw enviable talent, in a transparent yet solid shell
Everyone knows who she is but no one's able to identify her in a crowd
She's the one that every man wants to date but
doesn't know her name, where she's from, or her cares
The one who every girl dreams of being,
waking in the morning hoping to catch a glimpse of her
in the mirror
Or staring into their barren purses grasping for the silver piece
that will bring her closer to the surface
Yet the Girl with the Pink Hair doesn't exist,  can't be reached
And will never be found.
Never meant to replace her Jerica,
Jem accidentally crept into existence and became the girl Jerica
all of a sudden wished she could be.
Jerica, the girl who opened a shelter for troubled girls,
desperately holding to the coat tails of a man with "stars" in his eyes
and Jem's hypnotic melodies in his ears
Jem is the girl that we look into the mirror and want to see staring back,
the girl we all secretly wish he would see when he looks into our eyes
The girl who we can hide our true unbeautiful selves behind
The beginning of our ugliness and dissatisfaction began with this simple
afternoon cartoon based on a girl with a beautiful and caring soul
who just wants to be
the girl with pink hair.

Jem and the Holograms

So, this is the first posting EVER of my blog and I must say that I have many months?days?years? to get caught up.  I am a scientist-in-training doing breast cancer research at a university that's kind of a big deal *snicker*.  However, my passion, my love, my movement is to express my self through writing.  Over the years, I've accumulated pages and pages of emotion, and life, and friends, and cocktails :) and I have sooo much to say.  Because of the oddity of how I interpret life, I've always considered myself a misfit of sorts, never really fitting to any single mold.  At times, I think I'm blessed to not walk around as an empty shell, refusing to be carried in the winds of a society that boasts of domesticism and a never-ending race for money.  And in those times, the strangest (and often funniest, lol) things cross my mind which I think should be shared...so here goes...

Let's start with Jem and the Holograms.  Does anyone remember this show from the '80s?  For some reason, this cartoon crossed my mind a couple of weeks ago and I began to wonder about it.  I know that it was one of my favs but all I really could remember was this rocker with pink hair with special star earrings that made her turn into someone else.  So I decided to refresh my memory and watched a couple of episodes that I managed to find on youtube;  ok, who am I kidding, I got sucked into watching for a couple hours, it was addictive.  So here's where it gets interesting.   This cartoon was based on a girl (Jerica) who inherits this machine that can change her into a leader of a "punk" rock band (Jem) who is all of a sudden prettier and much cooler.  The most dysfunctional part is that Jerica's boyfriend, Rio falls in love with Jem...umm what??? Yeah that's right, so Jem and Rio start a relationship and meanwhile he still dates Jerica, when she's not Jem...ummm what???

This KIDS' cartoon is based on a girl that can change herself into someone that her boyfriend cheats on her with..yes, her boyfriend cheats on her with herself. Think about this for a second.

Then every episode we're left wondering if she's going to have the nerve to tell her boyfriend that she's Jem.  She never does because she's terrified that he'll dump her for being dishonest...what???...I mean really, what was he going to do, dump her and start dating her other self exclusively??? Simply crazy!!

I was speaking with my best friend about this and we came to realize that Jem and the Holograms is just the beginning of the way, we as adult women, think about men.  Even in cartoons that we watched as kids, we were taught that it's okay to stay with a cheating boyfriend as long you're not being dishonest. What?? So, yes ladies, we concluded that all of our problems started with Jem and the Holograms...nonetheless, I think I want to be her for Halloween...you see what I mean?! Simply crazy!!!
